Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Jerry Cowley

Ceist:

1304 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for Transport the extent of the 10 mph speed limit on the State's railways for safety reasons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16836/02]

Iarnród Éireann has advised me that there are seven locations throughout the network where there are temporary speed restrictions of 10 mph or less. These are related to works in renewing track and signalling and will be removed on completion of the works.

In addition, I am advised that there are 14 other locations throughout the network where there are permanent speed restrictions of 10 mph or less because of conditions specific to those locations. These are mainly due to the design features of the original railway, such as curvature of track at Portarlington, gradients approaching Heuston and Kilkenny stations, railway running beside the public road on Wexford Quays, etc..
