Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

John Perry

Ceist:

1306 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Transport if his Department will intervene on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo and waive the computerised test for their driving licence in view of the fact that this person has attempted the test two times; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16860/02]

Under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, and the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1999 to 2001, it is a matter for the appropriate licensing authority, in this case Sligo County Council, to determine the eligibility of a person for a driving licence and to issue licences.

Since 11 June 2001, all applications for first provisional licences must be accompanied by a theory test certificate.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

1307 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport when the criteria for obtaining a driver's licence to drive a van were changed whereby those who had a standard licence covering private cars found that their entitlement to drive a van was removed; and the additional qualification criteria that have been imposed. [16895/02]

The criteria for obtaining a driver's licence to drive a van have not changed. The Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1999 to 2001, provide that the category of vehicle which may be driven by the holder of a driving licence with entitlement to drive category B vehicles, cars and small vans, covers vehicles having a design gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3,500 kg. and having passenger accommodation for not more than eight persons.
