Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rail Accidents.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

1319 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Transport if his officials have received a final report in relation to the collapse of bridge structures on the Maynooth suburban rail line on 9 April 2002; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the works involved form part of the Celbridge interchange works; the measures which have been put in place to prevent a recurrence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17437/02]

Iarnród Éireann has advised me that its internal inquiry is still ongoing into the collapse of beams onto the railway at Collinstown on 9 April 2002 during the construction of a new bridge. I am aware that contractors are carrying out the works for Kildare County Council as part of the Celbridge interchange project.

Iarnród Éireann also advised me that the contractor for the works has issued a revised method statement for the construction of the bridge. The method statement sets out the means by which the construction can be completed in a safe manner. This is currently being assessed by Iarnród Éireann to ensure that a reoccurrence can be prevented. Iarnród Éireann has forwarded the revised method statement to the Railway Inspectorate.

Pending consideration and approval by the railway inspectorate and Iarnród Éireann of the revised method statement, work on the site remains suspended.
