Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Order Offences.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

1405 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda authorities have received complaints form residents regarding serious anti-social activities which continue until 4.00 a.m. outside the Temple Theatre, Hardwicke Street, Dublin 1; the action the Gardai are taking in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16839/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that complaints in relation to the operation of the Temple Theatre over the last several years have been of a general nature and were dealt with promptly. The incidents which occured outside the premises were of a public order nature. Local Garda management indicate that recent complaints relate to the operation of this premises and anti-social activities. I understand that a meeting has recently taken place at Fitzgibbon Street Garda station between the local residents and local Garda management to discuss issues relating to the Temple Theatre. It was explained to residents that, in the current round of licensing renewal applications, the Gardaí would be applying to have the hours restricted to 2 a.m. and not 4 a.m., as in the application currently before the licensing court. The residents informed the Gardaí that they would prefer more stringent controls or a closure of the premises. Residents were advised to set out their objections and lodge them with the District Court clerk, which they did. The Garda assured residents that they would continue to properly police the venue and attention would be afforded by both foot and mobile patrols. I am further informed that when this matter came before the annual licensing court, both applications were adjourned for mention to Dublin District Court on 23 October 2002 when it is expected that a date will be fixed for the hearing of the various objections. In the meantime, the existing licences remain in force and the Garda continues to deal with issues as and when they arise.
