Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

1445 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the steps he is proposing to take to meet the needs of 50,000 households on waiting lists for local authority housing and the estimated 5,000 homeless people here. [15391/02]

The results of the most recent assessment of housing needs undertaken by local authorities at the end of March this year will be published shortly by my Department.

A range of measures are already in place to assist local authorities expand their housing programmes and meet increasing social housing needs. These include the local authority and voluntary housing programmes and a range of other measures including shared ownership and affordable housing, and improvement works in lieu of local authority housing. Some €1.1 billion capital funding is being provided by my Department to local authorities and voluntary bodies in the current year for these programmes.

I expect that output from all the social housing measures, along with vacancies occurring in the existing rented housing stock, will enable the housing needs of approximately 13,000 households, including homeless persons, to be met this year.
