Vol. 556 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Port Tunnel.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

109 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that his figure that only 2% of trucks will not fit into the Dublin Port Tunnel is incorrect and the figure is in fact 32% of heavy goods vehicles. [19591/02]

The survey, to which I referred in my reply to Question No. 126 on 16 October 2002, was conducted in relation to all vehicles exiting Dublin Port. The survey involved a height analysis of thousands of trucks leaving the port each day during the initial two months of the survey period. In total, the number of trucks surveyed during this time was well in excess of 100,000 vehicles and the results indicated that 98% of those trucks would be able to utilise the Dublin Port Tunnel. Subsequent data confirm this figure.

I remain satisfied that the conclusions of this truck height survey are valid and that the Dublin Port Tunnel will contribute very significantly to the continuing development of the port and the alleviation of traffic problems in the city of Dublin.
