Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Meat and Bonemeal.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

211 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of tonnes of meat and bone meal in storage at the present time; the average cost of storage per tonne, per year, of this product; the country or countries accepting meat and bone meal; the cost per tonne including transport; if plans are in place to utilise meat and bone meal here; the savings to Ireland and the industry in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19829/02]

At present there are 237,000 tonnes of meat and bone meal, MBM, in store. The average storage cost is 33 cent per tonne per week. Irish MBM is currently accepted for incineration as part of an industrial process or for energy generation in the UK and Germany. The range of disposal costs agreed under the most recent tender procedure were between €225 and €275 per tonne. A number of proposals for the use of MBM either in industry or energy generation in this country are at various stages of consideration by the relevant regulatory authorities, including the Environment Protection Agency. I have established an interdepartmental and agency committee which is currently examining the best available option for the use of MBM in industry and in non-feed uses here.
