Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

320 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science when a very significant upgrading requiring major refurbishment to achieve basic standards for Charleville Christian Brothers School as concluded in the feasibility study by the Department of Education and Science will be completed. [19873/02]

Gerard Murphy

Ceist:

349 Mr. Murphy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the findings from the architects and consultants who were nominated and funded by his Department to carry out a full and extensive feasibility study of the secondary school of Christian Brothers School, Charleville, County Cork; and when the funding will be provided to carry out the recommendations cited in the report. [19857/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 320 and 349 together.

The Christian Brothers Secondary School is one of three post-primary schools serving the needs of the Charleville area. An application for capital grant-aid to upgrade and refurbish facilities at the school is currently under examination in the planning section of my Department. This process involves consideration of all relevant factors, including enrolment and demographic trends in the area and the overall accommodation requirements of the centre. A decision on this matter will be notified to the school authorities as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the school authorities have applied for funding to carry out remedial works that are deemed essential on health and safety grounds. Officials of my Department's postrimary building unit are currently examining the report submitted by the school authority.
