Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

331 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the deplorable lack of facilities available to the Scoil Naisiúnta in Gortahork, County Donegal, which, among other problems, suffers from a serious lack of accommodation and is in constant danger of being flooded with sewage from a sewer outlet situated at the school's back wall; and if he will take swift and decisive action to remedy these problems. [19741/02]

The most up to date position on all building projects is available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

Later this year when a financial allocation has been made for the primary school building programme in the 2003 Estimates I will be framing a further comprehensive programme of works. The needs of Scoil Naisiúnta, Gortahork, County Donegal, can be considered at that time.

Health and safety issues at Scoil Naisiúnta, Gortahork, are a matter for the management authorities of the school in the first instance. It is not a matter for my Department to provide funding from the annual allocation for primary buildings for works external to the vested area – i.e. the site – of a primary school.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

332 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be made available for a school (details supplied) in County Dublin to provide extra accommodation for children who wish to attend their local school in the year 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19748/02]

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme under way at present, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

In view of the extensive nature of the programme, my Department has no plans at present to start architectural planning for further major primary school building projects. My Department will be reviewing the position in the light of the allocation to be made for the primary building programme in the 2003 Estimates.

In the meantime, the board of management of the school referred to by the Deputy should ensure that essential health and safety issues at the school are attended to. They should therefore continue to use the devolved grant for minor works and if the cost of any works of an emergency nature exceeds the amount available under the devolved grant, they may apply to my Department's building unit for grant aid.
