Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

382 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in having a resource teacher and classroom assistant put in place in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork whose needs have been identified. [20137/02]

My Department allocates resource posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary teaching hours to second level schools and vocational education committees to cater for special needs pupils. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each case is considered on its merits and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, in accordance with the advice of the psychological service, my Department has approved an additional teacher allocation of four hours per week resource teaching to cater for the special needs of the pupil in question. It is a matter for the school authorities, who were notified of the decision in September, to make the necessary arrangements to have the approved resource teaching provided.
