Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Legislation.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

455 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans to amend the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960, to facilitate the promotion of Christianity. [20259/02]

Decisions on the content of programme material are a matter for individual broadcasters. Under section 28(2)(a) of the Broadcasting Act, 2001, RTE is required to provide a comprehensive range of programmes including coverage of religious and cultural activities and to cater for the expectations of the community generally as well as members of the community with special or minority interests. Section 20(4) of the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960 does, however, impose a ban on religious advertising and I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 825 of 9 October in this regard.

Question No. 456 answered with Question No. 438.

Question No. 457 answered with Question No. 442.
