Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

554 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the various payments made to expectant and post-natal mothers by health boards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20412/02]

In accordance with section 64 of the Health Act, 1970, a maternity cash grant of €10.16 is payable in respect of each confinement to women with full eligibility, i.e. medical card holders. In addition, health boards who operate the supplementary welfare allowance scheme on behalf of the Department of Social and Family Affairs may, on a means tested basis, make an exceptional needs payment for maternity clothing, hospital requisites, equipment and clothing for the baby etc. Health boards may also pay a domiciliary birth grant of €1,300 where a woman chooses to have a home birth.
