Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

579 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Transport if he will consider carrying out a feasibility study on rail freight and its future here; if implications on environmental issues and current and future road congestion will be concluded; and if the feasibility of bringing in private operators will be included. [19787/02]

John Dennehy

Ceist:

582 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the widespread concern regarding the future of rail freight transport; if he will restate the Government's commitment to diverse means of transport, particularly for heavy goods; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19893/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 579 and 582 together.

Earlier this year my Department engaged consultants to undertake a comprehensive strategic rail review of both passenger and rail freight services. The primary purpose of the review is to provide the Government with a basis for establishing a strategic policy framework for the future development of the rail sector in Ireland over the next 20 years.

Central to the review is an examination of the potential for rail freight services as well as the associated implications for the environment and the road network. During the consultation process undertaken by the consultants involved in preparing the review, the suggestion arose of some private sector involvement in rail freight operations. The consultants, in preparing their report, will take account of the suggestions made. I understand that the review is now well advanced and is due for completion by the end of this year.
