Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

598 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Transport his plans to upgrade the Arklow to Dublin rail line; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20613/02]

Iarnród Éireann advises me that the line from Dublin to Rosslare Europort is currently being upgraded with significant EU and Exchequer grant assistance. The track is being upgraded to continuous welded rail and 15 miles of track are programmed for upgrading this year. The benefits of further investment will be realised early next year with the introduction of some of the 80 new diesel railcars on the route from Arklow to Dublin. This will allow the replacement of the existing outdated rolling stock with state-of-the art air-con ditioned railcars. The first of these railcars are due for delivery on 15 November. Iarnród Éireann has indicated to me that it is examining the feasibility of introducing additional peak hour services on the route between Arklow and Dublin.
