Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

647 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government details on the success or otherwise of the number of pilot sewerage schemes in Meath and elsewhere last year that were introduced by his predecessor; his views on whether the present level of grant aid towards private sewerage schemes such as at Ballinode, County Monaghan, is totally inadequate; if he intends to extend the pilot schemes to other areas or increase the grant aid available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19742/02]

The national rural water monitoring committee has recommended a pilot programme by local authorities to test a range of new, small-scale wastewater collection and treatment systems, based on design/ build/operate – DBO – procurement, as a means of meeting the requirements of small rural communities. My Department has accepted the committee's recommendation and the relevant local authorities will shortly invite expressions of interest by contractors in relation to the provision of such facilities at some 12 locations around the country.

Subject to a satisfactory outcome to the pilot testing, the committee envisages a potential role for group sewerage schemes in the collection of domestic wastewater from households outside the immediate catchment of the new treatment systems. The confirmation of such a role for group sewerage schemes and any review of the associ ated grants must await the results of the pilot programme.
