Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Price Inflation.

Joan Burton

Ceist:

98 Ms Burton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the survey carried out by Retail Intelligence, the on-line division of Checkout magazine, showing that consumers pay 12% more for a basket of toiletry items in an independent pharmacy than they do in a supermarket; her views on the results of the survey; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20346/02]

I am not familiar with the details of the survey referred to by the Deputy. The fact that it appears to show that prices of items can vary between different types of retail outlet highlights the value of shopping around for the most competitive prices. The removal of restrictions on entry to the retail pharmacy profession earlier this year should also in the longer term, through promoting greater competition, be a factor in reducing prices.
