Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Plant Closures.

David Stanton

Ceist:

162 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the amount it will cost the State to close down and dismantle the IFI plant at Marino Point in Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20239/02]

It is expected that the liquidator would seek to sell the plant and machinery on the Marino Point site as this would have a significant value. In these circumstances, it would be a matter for the purchasers to dismantle and take away any articles purchased. In addition, figures which were prepared for the company recently, involving an external environmental consultant, suggested that the cost of the environmental clean-up of the Marino Point site would amount to some €3 million, though this was a tentative estimate.

However, I should point out that the responsibility for the site, including any obligations in relation to its clean-up, will continue to rest with the company, even when it is in liquidation. In this regard, the fact that the site has a significant value should ensure that any remedial works required will be carried out by the liquidator or by any new owner of the site.

Question No. 163 answered with Question No. 110.
