Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

173 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she can indicate a specific reduction in premiums on foot of particular changes in administration of the industry or otherwise notwithstanding recent developments and proposals relating to the insurance industry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20585/02]

I cannot give the indication requested by the Deputy. My responsibility is to spearhead the reform programme which I announced on 25 October 2002, and which is designed to improve the functioning of the Irish insurance market. It is the responsibility of the insurance industry, as a quid pro quo, to introduce cost reductions in premia for consumers.

Ceist:

174 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the way in which profits and dividends earned by insurance companies here compare with other EU jurisdictions; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20586/02]

The Motor Insurance Advisory Board report published earl ier this year contains much of the information being sought.

Ceist:

175 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of insurance companies currently refusing to quote for particular types of insurance cover here at the present time; if she has examined the possibility of restrictive practices in this area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20587/02]

I have not got the information requested by the Deputy. My Department, in conjunction with the Competition Authority, will be undertaking a study of competition in the insurance sector which will include consideration of these issues.
