Vol. 557 No. 3

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

145 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application on behalf of the Midland youth service for a significant increase in funding, to help them in their efforts, with young people in promoting, developing and co-ordinating a comprehensive response to youth needs in the Midland region; if this application will be favourably considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21998/02]

My Department received a request for increased funding from two projects under the aegis of the Midland regional youth service, namely Athlone youth community project and Mullingar youth project. An additional youth worker post has been sought for each of the projects in 2002.

These projects are currently in receipt of funding under the special projects for youth scheme. A grant of €89,212 has been made available for the Athlone youth community project and a grant of €44,853 was allocated in respect of the Mullingar youth project.
My Department considered the applications for additional funding but it was not possible to accede to these requests this year, having regard to the funding available and to the high level of existing commitments in the youth sector. A renewed application for funding in 2003 may be submitted to my Department and this application will be given full consideration in light of available financial resources.
