Ceist:

265 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education and Science if the attention of officials at his Department was drawn to complaints regarding a Department inspector for industrial and reformatory schools between 1976 and 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22631/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 263 to 265, inclusive, together.

Following this matter being raised in April of this year, the Secretary General of my Department contacted the Garda and handed the matter over for investigation. Visits by the inspector to the industrial and reformatory schools were normally documented and my Department has copies of written reports of such inspections in respect of the industrial schools in question. These reports and any other relevant documents in the Department's archive are available to the Garda Síochána for the purpose of its investigation. Pending the outcome of these investigations, it would not be appropriate for me to comment at this time.
