Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Service Broadcasting.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

293 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans for the broadcasting industry, with particular reference to the role to be played in the future by RTE; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22585/02]

I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 93 of 9 October 2002.

The Forum on Broadcasting was established to consider the future of broadcasting in Ireland. The Forum submitted its report to me in mid-August. Following publication of the report I sought comments from interested parties on the recommendations made by the forum. I am currently considering the recommendations of the forum in conjunction with the submissions I received. I will bring forward my proposals in relation to the forum's recommendations in the near future.
As I have outlined previously to the House, I am of the view that the people of Ireland are likely to be best served by a broadcasting sector that includes RTE as a strong national public service broadcaster with a wide remit that is clearly defined. I agree with the recommendation of the forum that the role of RTE as the national public service broadcaster should be reaffirmed.
