377 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the hospitals which have a medical social work service; the number of such medical social workers in each hospital; the medical areas in which they are engaged in each hospital; the number of applications he has received from hospital authorities for additional medical social workers; and the number of hospitals which do not have a medical social worker service. Hospitals employ a range of social worker grades, including medical social worker. There were in excess of 220 social workers employed in the acute hospital sector at end 2001. The number of medical social workers employed at that date is set out in the table below. The assignment of social workers within a hospital is a matter for the hospital management and this information is not routinely collected by my Department. Responsibility for the employment of social workers in a hospital, including the provision of medical social work services, is also a matter for the relevant employing agency through the service planning process.
