Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Paul Kehoe

Ceist:

424 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when his Department will advertise for new Garda entrants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22544/02]

Recruitment to the Garda Síochána is governed by the provisions of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, and is by open competition conducted by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners. The selection process includes a written reasoning ability test, a competitive interview and a medical examination. A recruitment competition was advertised in the national newspapers earlier this year and the selection process arising from that competition is ongoing. No decision has been made on a date for any future competition.

Ceist:

425 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of new entrants that entered the Garda training college in 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22545/02]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that, as of 18 November, a total of 547 trainees have entered the Garda college this year.
