Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

433 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his further views on Parliamentary Question No. 409 of 12 November 2002, in view of the details supplied in the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 300 of 5 November 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22621/02]

I have read the reply of 5 November, 2002 by the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, in which he stated that the Commissioners of Public Works had closed the sale in relation to the purchase of the site for the new Garda station in Leixlip. My subsequent reply of 12 November, in which I stated that I had been informed by the Office of Public Works that they were close to completing the purchase, was based on information from that office that the legal formalities relating to the purchase had been virtually completed.

I do not think that too much should be read into technical differences between closing a sale and completing all of the formalities of sale. There was certainly no intention to cause any confusion on the matter. The substance of the matter remains that the site has now been purchased. The building of the new Garda station at Leixlip will be progressed with all due urgency in accordance with overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other resources. I am not in a position at this time, however, to say when the project will start.
