Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Service Broadcasting.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

95 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his policy in relation to public service broadcasting, in particular, the case being made by RTE for an increase in the licence fee; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22414/02]

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

113 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans for the funding, structures and future development of RTE; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22417/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 95 and 113 together.

As outlined in my reply to Question No. 93 of 9 October 2002, I am of the view that the people of Ireland are likely to be best served by a broadcasting sector that includes RTE as a strong national public service broadcaster with a wide remit that is clearly defined. I concur with the Forum on Broadcasting's recommendation that the role of RTE as the national public service broadcaster should be reaffirmed.

On how RTE should be funded in the future, I agree with the Forum on Broadcasting's recommendation that RTE should continue to be dual funded, receiving moneys from the proceeds of the television licence fee along with commercial revenue. I expect to receive a formal application from RTE shortly for an increase in the television licence fee and that application will be considered on its merit.
