Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

114 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when it is expected that the comprehensive coastal protection strategy study will be completed; the person by whom the study is being conducted; when the promised coastal zone management Bill will be introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22343/02]

The coastal protection strategy study is expected to be completed in two years. Coastal mapping which is associated with the study may take longer and is dependent on the rate at which it is to be progressed. The process of appointing consultants is currently under way and it is anticipated that the contract will be awarded by the end of 2002.

The legislative action required to support the effective operation of integrated coastal zone management, including any necessary updating or modification of existing statutory codes, will be pursued as a central element of the overall work in this area. The aim is to publish legislative proposals on the matter next year.
