Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Taxi Regulations.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

125 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Transport the role of the proposed taxi regulator's office; when it is expected that the office will be established; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23451/02]

Pending the drawing up of legislative proposals which will be brought to Government early in the new year, it is proposed that the office of the national taxi regulator will be established on a non-statutory basis in February 2003 and I have asked my officials to bring forward the establishment to January, if possible.

It is envisaged that the office of the national taxi regulator will have a national focus and will have full effective control over the promotion of a professional, efficient and customer-friendly service by taxis, hackneys and limousines, including the overall application of standards and the licensing of taxis, hackney and limousine drivers and vehicles.
