Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Computer Security.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

137 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach if all information electronically stored in his Department is adequately protected against hackers; if there have been breaches in this security; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25390/02]

Currently my Department does not have any record of any actual or suspected incidents of computer hackers accessing, or trying to access, any data on its network. I am, however, satisfied that security is adequate to deter hacking.

It would be imprudent for me to provide details of the security systems involved. However, I can say that my Department maintains various systems to protect its network from all forms of hacking. These systems are constantly examined and upgraded in light of new technological developments. As part of this process, my Department has recently undertaken a network security review to assess the security measures currently in place.
