Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drainage Schemes.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

186 Ms M. Wallace asked the Minister for Finance the State agency which has responsibility to maintain, develop and upkeep the drainage and flood defences of the entire River Tolka and its tributaries; the State agency which has responsibility to maintain, develop and upkeep the drainage and flood defences of the River Castle which flows through Dunboyne into the Tolka; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25504/02]

The Office of Public Works has no responsibility for maintenance of the Rivers Tolka or Castle as they do not form part of a drainage district or any drainage scheme carried out under the 1945 Arterial Drainage Act.

As the Deputy will be aware, a study of the River Tolka is currently under way and is being funded by the Office of Public Works. The report is expected to be complete in May 2003. In the meantime, an interim report has been prepared for Dublin City Council by the consultants and this is being examined by council and Office of Public Works officials. I understand that both Meath and Fingal County Councils have also requested interim reports on the parts of the Tolka in their respective areas and these are expected in the next two to three weeks.
