Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Niall Blaney

Ceist:

428 Mr. Blaney asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when a social housing organisation lets houses, the way in which soon afterwards they must notify the local authority with the list of new tenants; the input a local councillor can have in such a scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25837/02]

I assume that the question refers to the letting of houses provided by an approved housing scheme and the loan subsidy scheme. These schemes are administered by the relevant local authority. Issues such as the allocation of tenancies in these projects are a matter for the approved housing body and the relevant local authority to determine.

In projects provided under the capital assistance scheme a minimum of three quarters of the units are let to households who are qualified for local authority housing, homeless persons, persons surrendering local authority houses or elderly emigrants returning from abroad. The remaining units may be let to households in need of accommodation nominated by the approved housing body, irrespective of their other circumstances. Where accommodation is provided under the capital loan subsidy scheme the units must be let to households who are qualified for local authority housing in order to qualify for maximum funding available under the scheme. Local authority decisions in regard to the letting of individual dwellings by an approved body are, in common with the letting of local authority dwellings, exercisable as an executive function under the responsibility of the manager.
