Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Government Expenditure.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

63 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance the projected figures and the actual figures for current expenditure by the Government over each of the years 2000, 2001 and 2002; and the reasons for the overrun. [25635/02]

In 2000 the Revised Estimates provided for net Voted current expenditure of €16.665 billion. The outturn was €16.79 billion, €125 million or 0.75% above the projected figure.

In 2001 the Revised Estimates provided for net voted current expenditure of €20.268 billion. The outturn was €20.436 billion, €168 million or 0.83% above the projected figure.

In 2002 the Revised Estimates provided for net voted current expenditure of €23.379 billion. The estimated outturn which was included in the white paper is €23.487 billion, €108 million or 0.46% above the projection. I still believe that spending overall will come in on or close to target this year.
As shown above the variance in the figures in the years 2000 and 2001 was less than 1% in each case. The overruns were as a result of somewhat higher than projected spending in some Departments – including Health and Children, Education and Science and the Environment and Local Government – which were partly offset by lower than projected spending in other Departments.
