According to my Department's records, the number of days absence taken by teachers in voluntary secondary schools that can be attributed to illness, either certified or uncertified, was 108,147 days in the 1999-2000 school year, 108,516 days in the 2000-2001 school year and 110,056 days in the 2001-2002 school year. The cost to the Exchequer in substitution for these absences in each of the specified years was approximately €4.91 (IR £3.87) million, €5.84 (IR £4.6) million and €6.80 million respectively.
