Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Educational Achievements.

John Bruton

Ceist:

382 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the measures he proposes to take on foot of research, originally commissioned in 1998 from the equality studies department of University College Dublin, on the reasons for boys doing badly in exams; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1406/03]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the research project Co-education, Gender Equality and Mathematics Achievement which was commissioned by the former equality committee of my Department and carried out by the equality studies centre, UCD, in association with St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, and the statistics department of UCD. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between co-education, single sex education and mathematics achievement. The study commenced in 1998.

The results of the study have not been submitted to my Department yet, hence I am not in a position to make any statement on the matter referred to in the Deputy's question at this time.
