Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fisheries Policy.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

226 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if two free tonnage permits will be issued to a persons (details supplied) in County Cork. [2947/03]

As part of a necessary consultative process, I recently circulated to the sea fishing industry a document entitled, Outline of Likely Main Features of a New Limited Inshore Scheme for Irish Fishing Boats. That document is on the agenda for the next meeting of the sea fishing boat licensing policy review group on 10 February. I will carefully consider the outcome of the consultative process before finalising the scheme for introduction as soon as possible. Public notice will be given when the scheme is being introduced and the persons referred to as well as all other persons who contacted my Department in the matter will be advised directly by my Department of the application requirements.

Ceist:

227 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the dates for the beginning and end of the shrimp season; and his proposals for change in this regard. [3023/03]

I am committed to continuing to work with the inshore sector on the development of sustainable management regimes for the sector. The management regime for the shrimp fishery for 2002 provided for the closure of the fishery between 7 May and 17 August 2002. This regime is currently under review by the Department and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara in consultation with the inshore sector with a view to putting in place management arrangements for 2003.
