Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Statistics.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Ceist:

237 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of people aged between 16 years and 25 years of age who were diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for each year from 1995 to 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2855/03]

As ulcerative colitis is not a notifiable disease, comprehensive information on the number of people diagnosed with the condition is not available. For those with the condition who require hospitalisation, data is available from the hospital in-patient enquiry, HIPE, system which records information on hospitalisations in all publicly funded acute hospitals. The following table provides the number of hospitalisations of persons aged 16 to 25 years where the principal diagnosis was ulcerative colitis for the years 1995 to 2001. If patients are admitted more than once in a given year, each attendance is recorded separately in HIPE. Data for 2002 are not yet complete.
