Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

271 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport his proposals to increase the passenger throughput of the North Kildare rail stations at Kilcock, Maynooth, Leixlip, Hazelhatch and Sallins; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3009/03]

I am informed by Iarnród Éireann that services on the Maynooth line – Kilcock, Maynooth and Leixlip – were recently upgraded when the track was doubled, new railcars acquired and service frequency increased. Further capacity will be added when some of the 80 new diesel railcars, the first batch of which was delivered recently, are introduced on the route later this year.

I am informed by Iarnród Éireann that the Arrow services on the South Kildare route serving Hazelhatch and Sallins are currently at full capacity. However, the length of trains will be increased later this year from six to eight carriage trains and the platforms at these stations are currently being extended to accommodate this. In addition, a turnback facility is being provided at Newbridge station to facilitate the improved operation of commuter trains.

These works combined with the entry into service of the new railcars will result in an increase in excess of 100% in commuter capacity on the south Kildare line later this year.
