Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Employment Schemes.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

302 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs his views on whether many community groups who have had a major role in parish and rural development in the past ten years will have major problems to continue their good work as a result of major cutbacks in community employment schemes; and if he will use his influence within Government to have numbers restored and give those on social welfare the opportunity to develop themselves and their area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2972/03]

The position is that community employment, which currently operates under the aegis of the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment is subject to a review at senior official level in which my Department is represented. The value of CE to community initiatives is fully appreciated and these will be reflected in the deliberations of the review group.
