Vol. 561 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

281 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the number of carriages on order for commuter, Intercity and DART services; the numbers to be introduced to each service in the forthcoming years; the number of corresponding carriages which will be decommissioned in conjunction with the introduction of new stock; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3803/03]

I understand from Irish Rail that they currently have on order the following new railway carriages: 80 new diesel rail cars which are in the process of being delivered and tested and are due to come into service during the course of 2003; 40 new DART carriages for delivery in 2005 and; 67 new mainline rail carriages for delivery in 2005.

All of these vehicles are being jointly funded by the Exchequer, Irish Rail's own resources and the EU under the national development plan.

The timing and extent of any decommissioning of rolling stock by Irish Rail is an operational matter for the company.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

282 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if he has plans to re-open the Navan to Connolly service; and the timeframe for the commencement and completion of this project. [3804/03]

My position with regard to future investment in the railways, including the question of a Navan to Connolly Station rail service, is that it should be guided by the findings and recommendations of the strategic rail review. I recently received the report from the consultants who carried out the work and I propose bringing it before my Government colleagues for their consideration shortly. Once the Government has had an opportunity to consider the review's findings and recommendations I propose publishing the document.

It would be inappropriate for me to comment on particular major rail development issues in advance of the Government having an opportunity to consider the review.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

283 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if he will direct Iarnród Éireann to make provision for a new station to serve the high-density development planned for the former Phoenix Park racecourse site, Castleknock, Dublin 15; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3805/03]

While the provision of a station at any particular location is the day-to-day responsibility of Iarnród Éireann, I am informed by the company that it is currently evaluating a proposal for a new station near the former Phoenix Park racecourse.
