Vol. 561 No. 4

Written Answers. - EU Funding.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

223 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the money that came from the EU in 2002 in agriculture subsidies and payments under the different schemes; the amount of that money that was paid to the farmers; the amount used on administration and other costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4265/03]

Transfers from the EU in 2002 in agriculture subsidies and payments amounted to €1.7 billion, some €1.4 billion of which was paid directly to farmers. The balance of the moneys was paid to the agriculture processing industry in various forms of market support. None of the EU moneys was used on administration costs. Such costs across all schemes operated by my Department are funded by the Exchequer.

The main areas of EU expenditure on agriculture and food in 2002 were as follows:

€m

Livestock Premiums

781

Arable Area Aid

132

131
