Vol. 561 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

275 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of people who have graduated to date in sports science from the University of Limerick; the number of those who got jobs in the sports science area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4390/03]

The Higher Education Authority's final statistical returns for 2001 show the number of graduates from the BSc in sports and exercise science at the University of Limerick for the academic years 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02 as 28, 29 and 30, respectively. These statistics relate to graduates who passed their final examinations in the given calendar year.

The Higher Education Authority first destinations report survey provides a snapshot of the initial labour market and further study or training patterns of students leaving third level courses. As part of the first destinations report, the 30 students who graduated from the course in 2001 were surveyed over a six to nine month period following the completion of their studies. Twenty six students out of the 30 responded to the survey. Of those who responded, 11 indicated they were in further study or training, two were seeking employment, three were unavailable for employment and ten were employed. Of the ten in employment, four were employed as teachers, four in the sports area and two in administration.
