The Government gave its approval to formally host the first European competitiveness summit in Dublin from 19-21 October 2003 on 22 January 2003. The European competitiveness summit provides Ireland with a unique opportunity to host this prestigious event bringing together EU and US leaders in politics, business and academia. The summit will bring a welcome focus to the competitiveness agenda in advance of our EU Presidency in 2004. A strong focus will also be placed on issues of social inclusion, corporate social responsibility and entrepreneurship.
In addition to its flagship event in Davos each year, the World Economic Forum brings together thousands of decision makers in regional summits and meetings to address the most crucial regional issues. These events enable members and constituents to discuss key issues and trends affecting the region by sharing first hand information and insights. This first European competitiveness summit presents us with an important opportunity to capture knowledge from leading political, business and academic experts. I hope this forum will have the capacity to influence change and drive the reforms needed to build competitiveness and greater social inclusion in the European Union.
