174 Mr. Ring asked the Taoiseach the amount which was spent in his Department for 2002 for media purposes or advertising; the areas in which the money was spent, that is, national papers, provincial papers, RTE radio, local radio and other sources; the money which was spent on videos, whether for promotional, educational or advertising purposes; the number of public relations staff who are employed in his Department; and the cost for 2002. The amount spent by my Department in 2002 for media purposes or advertising was €284,367.24. This includes €5,986.72 spent on advertising in Iris Oifigiúil.

A breakdown of this information into spending on national newspapers, regional-local papers, RTE radio, commercial national radio and local radio is given in the following table. No money was spent on preparation of videos in 2002.

These figures include €242,677.30 in respect of the National Forum on Europe. The bulk of this relates to advertising in the national and provincial media related to meetings of the forum around the country.
There are no public relations staff in the Department. However, personnel involved in media matters in my Department include the Government press secretary, the deputy press secretary, four Government press officers, a press and information officer and four clerical staff. The total cost for these personnel in 2002 was €480,745.
