Vol. 561 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Pat Breen

Ceist:

243 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Transport if there are plans to open the Ennis to Galway railway line similar to the upgrading of the Ennis-Limerick line which is currently ongoing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4844/03]

The work currently being carried out on the Ennis to Limerick railway line is part of the Railway Safety Investment Programme 1999 to 2003 and I am informed that this work will be completed by the end of the year.

My position with regard to all future investment in the railways is that such decisions should be guided by the findings and recommendations of the strategic rail review which was finalised recently. I propose bringing it before my Government colleagues for their consideration shortly. Once the Government has had an opportunity to consider the review's findings and recommendations I propose publishing the document.

It would be inappropriate for me to comment on particular rail development issues in advance of the Government having an opportunity to consider the review.
