Vol. 561 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Casualties.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

164 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the new evidence concerning the circumstances of the deaths of three Irish soldiers who lost their lives in the Lebanon in March 1989; if he has had recent meetings with relatives of these soldiers; the nature of the discussions that took place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4874/03]

I would like to express my sympathy to the families of Corporal Fintan Henegan, Private Thomas Walsh and Private Mannix Armstrong, who died while serving with UNIFIL on 21 March 1989.

I am aware of the "Prime Time" programme on 16 January 2002 about the tragic deaths of these personnel. I am advised by the military authorities that no new evidence has been presented to date in relation to this tragic incident. I have had no meetings with relatives of the three personnel concerned.
