Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - National Maritime College.

David Stanton

Ceist:

121 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the estimated cost of the new national maritime college which is to be based in Cork; the way in which the building of same is to be financed; the number of students that the college will be able to cater for at maximum capacity; when he expects the college to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5972/03]

The national maritime college is being provided under the public private partnership model. Focus Education will design, build, finance and operate for the term of the PPP contract, 25 years. Work on the construction of the college is due to start early next month and it will be operational by October 2004. When completed the college will accommodate 750 full-time equivalent students – based on an academic year.

The national maritime college will provide training facilities that will service the existing needs of both the Cork Institute of Technology and the non-military needs of the Irish Naval Service. Specialist spaces including survival facilities, seamanship and shipwrights' workshops, fire fighting and damage control, jetty and lifeboat facilities and engine room will be provided. The college will also provide specialised simulation equipment in the areas of navigation, bridge training, communications, engineering-machinery operations, liquid cargo handling/damage control and vessel traffic systems.

These facilities will fully comply with international standards and requirements for the future.
