Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - School Closures.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

132 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on proposals for the De La Salle BNS, Finglas East, where parents were recently informed that the school will close in 2004; the discussions which his Department has had with the authorities in this school; the reason for the decision to close; the arrangements for alternative school accommodation for the pupils affected; the proposals for the future use of the school and grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6001/03]

The school authorities recently advised my Department that due to declining enrolments, they have been examining various options for the future of the school. The option being considered at present, is the possibility of amalgamation with another local school, with effect from September 2004. I understand that the school authorities have written to parents of pupils in the school advising them of their intentions in this regard.

A meeting was held recently between the school authorities and my Department officials to explore some of the issues arising. Discussions are at a very early stage and no final decisions have been made. The school authorities have sought the views of the various agencies concerned and when these are received parents will be invited to a meeting to apprise them of the situation.
