Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Institutes of Technology.

Dan Boyle

Ceist:

69 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will use his powers under section 14(5) of the Dublin Institute of Technology Act 1992 not to approve the Dublin Institute of Technology operational programme and budget 2003-04 as it stands and send it back to the Dublin Institute of Technology governing body amended by removing clause 2.6. [5888/03]

Under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act 1992 the governing body is required to submit annually an operational programme and budget through the City of Dublin VEC to my Department for approval. The institute's annual budget is allocated following consideration of the programme and budget submission and having regard to the available funding and the Government's commitments and priorities. The implementation of the programme and budget and the management of the resources of the institute are matters for which the governing body and management of the institute are responsible. My Department has not yet met with the Dublin Institute of Technology to discuss its submission for the 2003-04 academic year. However, in light of current financial constraints and the fact that the institute will need to manage its resources carefully to keep expenditure within the approved budget, it is expected that it may have to review its priorities and effect economies across some or all areas of its activities.
