Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Health Board Allowances.

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

618 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the total amount of money paid out in rent supplements and rent allowance in 2002; the breakdown of this in respect of each of the health board areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7721/03]

The supplementary welfare allowance scheme, which is administered on behalf of my Department by the health boards, provides for the payment of a rent supplement to assist with reasonable accommodation costs of eligible persons who are unable to provide for their accommodation costs from their own resources and who do not have accommodation available to them from any other source.

Details of provisional rent supplement expenditure, by health board area, for the year 2002 are as shown in the attached tabular statement. Regulations made under the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act 1982 provide for the payment, subject to a means test, of a rent allowance to tenants residing in formerly rent-controlled dwellings. The rent allowance scheme is administered centrally by my Department and not by the health boards and therefore details of expenditure by Health Board area are not available. Expenditure on rent allowance for 2002 was €730,865.
