Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Service.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

317 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has plans to employ extra medical and paramedical staff in prisons; if so, if he will give details of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10468/03]

There are currently 88 nurses employed by the Irish Prison Service, including eight nurses who commenced training on 31 March 2003. The Irish Prison Service also employs twenty three doctors. There are vacancies for one full time and one part time doctor in the service at present. I understand that arrangements are being made to fill both of these vacancies. The question of employing more medical and paramedical staff will be kept under review.
