Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

John Perry

Ceist:

27 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary teachers who have a recognised professional qualification to teach sport and physical education as part of the curriculum at primary level; his plans to encourage and to support the professional development of teachers in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10228/03]

The B. Ed. degree qualifies all primary teachers to teach physical education and sport.

Physical education is included in the programme of pre-service for all primary teachers and will continue to be so included. A number of teachers also take additional elective courses in various aspects of physical education such as aquatics and games. Additionally, in-service courses in physical education are provided by education centres and other agencies as part of the summer programme of professional development for primary teachers.
The professional development of teachers will continue to be supported by the in-career development unit of my Department.
